Settle in Hamburg

Hamburg is where I live today, so this is the city I know best. I know what the first weeks here look like, which steps come first, and how long things really take compared to what the website says.

Getting registered

Your Anmeldung (registering your address) is one of the first must dos, and in Hamburg getting the appointment is usually the hardest part. It helps to be flexible about which office you go to, and to start looking as soon as you know your move in date. I'll tell you what to bring, what the form actually asks for, and what to do if your landlord hasn't given you the confirmation you need yet.

Finding your place to live

The Hamburg market moves quickly. Landlords usually ask for proof of income, a Schufa report and a short introduction about yourself, so it pays to have your documents ready before you start. I don't search for apartments for you (at least not yet), but I'm happy to talk through neighborhoods and what might suit you, whether you want quiet and green, close to work or right in the middle of things. I'll also explain how the process works and how to spot red flags.

Insurance, banking and the rest

Most of this works the same way across Germany, but the order matters. Together we sort out your health insurance, your tax ID, a bank account, your phone contract, and the Deutschlandticket, which makes the whole city (and the rest of the country) easy to get around.

Making Hamburg feel like home

This is the part I care about most. A new city only starts to feel like home once you have your people and your routines. I'll point you to places and communities where you can keep up your hobbies or pick up new ones, meet people and practice your German, even while you are still learning it. I'll also share the little unwritten rules that make the first months here easier.
